Session 8: Argumentation and the Next Generation Science Standards

SESSION OVERVIEW

In this short session, participants learn about the teaching and learning principles on which the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) are based. They are introduced to the three dimensions of the science standards and told how the performance expectations require students to do science, think like a scientist, and understand the core ideas of science. They explore the convergence between standards in English language arts, mathematics, and science, and learn how argumentation is situated in the center of academic learning in all three subject areas.

SESSION OBJECTIVES

ThemeGoals
Argumentation– Gain familiarity with the Next Generation Science Standards and specifically the Science and Engineering Practice: Engaging in Argument from Evidence.
– Build awareness of how argumentation deepens understanding of science ideas.
Learning and Teaching– Learn how the NGSS support best practices in teaching and learning.
– Become familiar with instructional shifts required by the NGSS.
