Session 6: Argumentation in the Classroom

SESSION OVERVIEW

Participants carefully observe as students engage in an academic discussion, in a 5-minute video of a fifth grade classroom. They work in pairs to capture what the teacher does and what the students do during the discussion. Participants think about what it takes to get argumentation to happen in a classroom, and what the role of the teacher is. Then they engage in a whole-group discussion about these ideas. An argumentation road map is introduced and questions are discussed.
