Session 3: Introduction to Argumentation

SESSION OVERVIEW

In this session, participants consider the learning progression for the practice of argumentation by observing and debriefing videos of students of various ages engaging in argumentation. Participants learn that:

  • Students can engage in aspects of argumentation at any age as long as they have experiences (either firsthand or secondhand) to draw on as evidence and support reasoning.
  • When teachers provide space and scaffolding for students to argue from evidence, they are quite capable of engaging in this complex task.
